Lauren's current research focuses on how fungi can be used to degrade heavy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soils, expanding bioremediation to apply to soil scenarios. She's developed a method to assess contaminated soils for biostimulation potential by identifying fungi present in contaminated soils with Illumina Sequencing. She's also involved in outreach through Females Excelling More in Math, Engineering and Science (FEMMES) and leads PhD Plus, a professional development program that assists engineering PhD students in making effective career decisions.

Lauren received her B.S. in Environmental Engineering from The Ohio State University in 2012. She recently received her M.S. in Environmental Engineering from Duke University in 2015.
